Inspiration
When my smartphone started filling up with bulky photos, often 3–5 MB each, I realized that many of them did not need to take up that much space. Compressing them afterward meant an extra step: first capturing the photos, then finding and compressing them. It felt tedious, so I built Caminify to compress images in real time as they are captured.
How we built it
Caminify is built with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, the Android SDK, and RevenueCat for payments. It performs image compression during capture rather than requiring a separate post-capture compression step. Video compression capabilities and performance depend on device hardware and supported codecs, so results may vary across devices.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenges were handling hardware incompatibilities that could cause crashes and reducing the delay introduced by real-time image compression while capturing photos.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of building a simple and focused app around an uncommon workflow: reducing image size at the moment a photo is captured instead of requiring users to compress it afterward. The interface is minimal, and the core experience works in near real time.
What we learned
I learned a lot about real-time media processing and the challenges of working with different device hardware. I also learned how to integrate RevenueCat for payments and how to build and iterate under a tight deadline.
What's next for Caminify App
The next steps are to support more devices, further optimize real-time compression, reduce the app's size, improve the paywall through A/B testing and experiments, and continue polishing the UI and overall user experience.
