Inspiration

Nowadays due to the Covid pandemic and the general lack of funding and staff, people have problems accessing the NHS. Thus we decided to develop a system that will reduce waiting lists in the hospitals.

What it does

Allow a GP to view the waiting list for a given operation within their NHS trust and then view a sorted list of waiting lists for other trusts in the country. The GP can then make a request using our system to have that patient's operation in a different trust where there is a shorter waiting list. An NHS staff member in the trust where the request was made to can then use our system to either accept or reject that request.

How we built it

For the implementation, Palantir's Foundry platform has been used. We imported an open-source NHS dataset to the system which has been transformed into separate objects (devised an ontology). They have been used to normalise the dataset (move data into separate objects) and make relations between them to be able to fetch required data when needed. For example, when filtering for a waiting list in the form, the region, provider and procedure properties from dropdowns are taken and used to obtain a correct list.

Challenges we ran into

There has been a steep learning curve in such a short period of time for using Palantir's Foundry without any previous knowledge of using it or a similar platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a pipeline to transform the data and a working demo to filter for waiting times for a specific provider and make requests to be added to the waiting list which can be either rejected or accepted by an NHS staff member.

What we learned

We mastered concepts like a pipeline, ontology, actions and workshop which make the basis of Palantir's Foundry platform. Consequently, we learnt how to develop great things to solve real-world problems with those sophisticated tools supported by Foundry. Finally, we can state that hackathons are full of inspiring people, fun activities and great food! We look forward to another one!
