Inspiration

The new concept of Green IT emerged in 1992 to help organisations save costs and consequently reduce the CO2 footprint. It helps select hardware that provides better efficiency and protects the environment.

Due to the pandemic, many of us have worked or studied from home. So naturally, it impacted the energy bills, power consumption and CO2 footprint. But of how much? Every PC component consumes electricity, and we often disregard the amount of Power necessary to keep IT hardware running and its impact on the environment. There are different ways to compute the power consumption: via hardware or software. The first provides a more accurate reading, possible via a power meter. You get a somewhat accurate reading of the electricity in kWh from the Power consumed (W) by plugging the PC or machine into the monitor and then everything into the power supply. Overload protection is also essential. The second method is via software; it may be less accurate depending on the specifications provided by the manufacturer. However, it can be ideal to choose the right components to decrease power consumption CO2 footprint and improve efficiency. One of the goals of Climate Action is Goal 13. Increasing awareness about climate change is part of Goal 13. This project, Green InfoTech, aims to measure PCs CO2 footprint and raise awareness of its impact on the environment. Green InfoTech helps students who might be concerned about how their hardware usage affects the environment. It also allows freelancers who may want to save money while also reducing their carbon footprint.

What it does

This application allows the users to select the hardware specifications, computes the power consumed and CO2 footprint.

Domain Name

Our domain name is greeninfo.tech

How we built it

The calculator script was built using python, we have tried to deploy using google app engine (Gcloud), whilst the frontend was built using React, Tailwindcss

Challenges we ran into

It was tricky to find out how much each component consumes in power and deploy with Google App Engine

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Build a chrome extension and implement a power consumption calculator

What we learned

We have learnt about PC consumption calculations and how much different components consume

What's next for Green InfoTech (GIT)

Implement a more detailed calculator with more options such as the number of optical drives or external devices
