Inspiration

49000 people died by suicide in 2023 according to Suicide Prevention CDC. Some disorders (major depression, certain anxiety disorders, eating disorders) are more common in women than in men. (National Institute of Mental Health) We created a survey to further research women's mental health issues. We wanted to see how frequently they face mental struggles and what problems they face (not being sure if they need therapy, not trusting online therapists, lacking a personalized mental support plan, and not finding online therapists, etc). This is the survey link: https://forms.gle/LLJwzgyry6wKHydm8

We got 51 responses from different women. Our data shows that 51% out of this pool face burn out between 1 to 5 times a month and 23% experience +10 emotional crashes a month. Interesting enough, 45.1% felt emotionally overwhelmed but unsure whether it was “serious enough” to seek help. This was our main motivation to build a brun out assessment feature into our platform that suggests if users need to seek serious therapy. We also provide them with easy access to verified online therapists. What makes our product different is that we understand how heavy and restricting the mental struggle could be, that is why we provide a feature of planning a mental wellbeing schedule for the users including different activities such as meditation and journaling. When someone struggles mentally, they find it hard to actually care for themselves and even simple tasks become so hard to achieve. This is why we created this tool that sees your Google Calendar and schedules mental wellbeing sessions according to your preferences built using FastAPI and Gemini API.

What it does

When someone struggles mentally, they find it hard to actually care for themselves and even simple tasks become so hard to achieve. This is why we created this tool that sees your Google Calendar and schedules mental wellbeing sessions according to your preferences built using FastAPI and Gemini API.

How we built it

Front end with react and css. Backend using fastapi and python and database using MongoDBAtlas. We used GeminiAPI for scheduling and chatbot,

Challenges we ran into

We had difficulty debugging since our folder structure wasn’t the same for either of our branches. When GitHub merging, some files were duplicated and there were many circular references and some references which didn’t point to anything. While we faced challenges, we were able to work together, and figure out things by our team work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We feel very accomplished that we were able to create a fully integrated system that provides mental wellbeing and support for people who need it the most. We are proud to be driven by a mission to make mental health accessible for everyone. We are proud of creating a safe and supportive Chatbot and integrate it seamlessly in our product. We are proud of the teamwork we have experienced together and proud of everyone’s efforts in making our product. Another accomplishment of ours is our use of Google Gemini API and also the usage of MongoDBAtlas. We all learned how to integrate this API and database into a backend. Within Google Gemini API, we successfully connected Google Calendar into our Google Gemini Chatbot.

What we learned

We learned many Git commands and GitHub features, how to manage a project in a team, and to identify problems within society and how to tackle these challenges using modern tools. We learned that when the issue is close to heart, we feel more motivated to work on it. In terms of skills, like said above, Git/GitHub and MongoDBAtlas, were tools we just learned in this hackathon.

What's next for CalmHer

We started ElevenLabs API integration and finalized it on our end but weren’t able to merge it into our main and final product. Specifically, we had built a Speech-to-Text (STT) API. We were hoping to use ElevenLabs as an option for users to answer open-ended assessment questions (currently not in assessment) vocally or by text/type. ElevenLabs will be able to recognize the tone and mental state of the person and also identify key words to recognize the state of the person. Our next steps will be to fully merge and implement this API into our product.
