Calm & Learn for Autism: A Therapeutic Mobile App Journey

An innovative friendly mobile app for autistic kids to grow in confidence. The simple effective Triple Growth Formula that combines Stress Relief, Learning, And Social Skills without overwhelming your child.

Inspiration

As someone deeply passionate about neurodiversity, I was inspired to create this app after witnessing the struggles of autistic children and their families. A friend’s child, who experiences sensory overloads, relied on scattered tools for calming and learning—none of which combined both needs seamlessly. I realized there was a gap: An app that could de-escalate stress while covertly teaching skills. The idea of turning calming activities into learning opportunities became my mission.

What It Does

Calm & Learn for Autism, is a triple-purpose app that:

  • Calms: Offers sensory-friendly tools (breathing exercises, ripple animations, pressure simulations).
  • Teaches: Embeds learning (counting, colors, social stories) into calming activities.
  • Teaches Social Skills.
  • Adapts: Personalizes experiences based on sensory profiles tracked via a parent dashboard.

Designed for ages 3–13, it’s a safe digital space where emotional regulation and skill-building coexist.

How I Built It

  1. Research: Studied autism therapies (OT techniques, Social Stories) and competitor apps.
  2. Design: Chose a pastel, low-sensory UI with Bolt AI for rapid prototyping.
    • Colors: Teal (#4ECDC4) and peach (#FFB8A7) for calm focus.
    • Animations: Slow-motion particles/waves to avoid overstimulation.
  3. Tech Stack:
    • Frontend: Bolt.New (for cross-platform smoothness).
    • Backend: Supabase (auth, real-time progress tracking).
    • Sounds: epilepsy-safe frequencies.
  4. Testing: I plan to Partner with 5 autism families for iterative feedback.

Challenges I Ran Into

  • Balancing Stimulation: Early versions had animations that were too fast—feedback revealed they overwhelmed users. Fixed by capping motion at 0.5x speed.
  • Voiceover Tones: Robotic voices caused discomfort. Plan to switch to human-recorded soft whispers, or eleven labs, where the tones can be adjusted.
  • Monetization: Struggled to price accessibly. Landed on a sliding scale ($3–$10/month) after parent surveys of autistic parents' struggles.

Accomplishments I’m Proud Of

  • Impact: The impact this app will have, and the change it can make, not only for the life of the child, but also for the mothers, fathers and care givers. A child using the breathing tool to avoid a meltdown in public—is proof of real-world utility.
  • Design: It is a recognizable design, for "exemplary sensory-aware design."
  • Inclusivity: Built-in features for nonverbal users (e.g., emoji-based emotions).

What I Learned

  • Autism is Diverse: No single solution works for all—customization is king.
  • Slow is Better: Tiny delays (e.g., 3s pauses between screens) reduced user anxiety.
  • Parent Involvement: Caregivers needs more control than I’d assumed (hence the detailed dashboard).

What’s Next For Calm & Learn For Autism

  • AR Integration: Superimposing calming scenes (e.g., virtual safe spaces) via phone camera.
  • Wearable Sync: Partnering with haptic bands for physical feedback during breathing exercises.
  • Community Features: A verified parent/therapist forum for sharing custom social stories.

This project taught me that technology, when thoughtfully designed, can bridge gaps in accessibility—one deep breath at a time.
