I was watching a news report that talked about the FTC and what they were asking in reference to the robocall problem. It occurred to me that the solution, or at least, an attempt at a solution might lie in a system that was in use in the recent past.
I remember when I had dialup internet service approx 12 years ago. it work as well as could be expected for what it was. One big problem is that no calls could be taken in the home because the internet connection prevented that. I then discovered one of a few online services that allow your calls to be routed to an 800 number, the caller would then leave a message, then that message was sent through the internet to your computer and you would then be able to listen to it.
Plainly put, the idea is to have user calls routed to a live person in a regional call center (which would generate sorely needed jobs), and those that are robocalls be terminated at that point and only those calls that are genuine people be sent on to their destination. Of course, calls on the "no call" list could also be dealt with. In addition, customers could sync their contact llist with a provided website to allow numbers of their chosing to be directly sent, as well as enter any numbers they do not wish to allow at all. Of course, 911 and emergency calls would be unaffected. The phone companies could get involved with the logistics, which should be nominal as most of the electronics involved are already in place.
This is the jist of the idea I propose.
Sincerely,
Charlie A. East
