What CallPermit does
CallPermit is a safety and workflow layer for agentic phone calls built on the official @call-e/calle SDK. Before an agent is allowed to place a call, CallPermit checks a deterministic permit describing what may be called, why, and under which constraints. It also applies deterministic idempotency so retries do not accidentally create duplicate calls.
The problem
Once an AI agent can act in the real world over the phone, a retry is no longer just another API response. It can mean another customer call, appointment request, escalation, or interruption. CallPermit separates conversational intelligence from authority:
- Tethers-backed preflight produces ALLOW, ASK, or DENY.
- ASK and DENY never reach the provider.
- Only ALLOW crosses the official CALL-E SDK boundary.
- Provider output is evidence and is reconciled against the original authority.
- Repeating the same authorized action returns the existing identity rather than blindly dialing again.
Genuine CALL-E proof
The official @call-e/calle 0.7.0 adapter made one genuine live call to CALL-E's publicly announced hackathon integration-test hotline using US/en-US routing and a harmless integration-test prompt. CALL-E returned a real call identity, completed status, transcript, provider evidence, and 0.95/high completion confidence. Reloading the persisted registry and repeating the same request returned the same identity with zero second dispatches.
The hotline is an integration-test route, not an appointment provider. CallPermit therefore did not invent appointment terms: post-call reconciliation correctly marked the appointment result INVALID_OR_UNCERTAIN_RESULT. This proves genuine CALL-E integration and dispatch, not UK delivery. An earlier controlled UK attempt was rejected before call creation and is not presented as a successful UK call.
Verification
- 75 deterministic tests pass.
- TypeScript build and live-runner type-check pass.
- Offline fake-CALL-E smoke path passes.
- ASK and DENY dispatch counts are both zero.
- ALLOW is the sole live dispatch path.
- Public evidence is redacted; secrets, phone numbers, raw transcripts, and the real call ID are not published.
Reusable contribution
CallPermit is designed as a reusable guardrail pattern for appointment calls, customer outreach, support callbacks, incident escalation, service coordination, and other workflows where duplicate or unauthorized calls would be costly.
