Project Title: CallOut.green

Project Description: Climate misinformation spreads faster than corrections. On social media platforms like X (Twitter) and Reddit, a single misleading claim about climate science can get thousands of upvotes or retweets before anyone pushes back with facts or a community note is added. Most people who know the science either don't have time to find the right source, don't know how to phrase a response that will actually land on social media, or give up because crafting a good reply from scratch is too much effort. The result: misinformation go unchallenged, and the social media algorithms pushes incorrect content.

Solution Overview: CallOut.green is a Chrome extension that empowers anyone to fight back against climate misinformation in seconds. The user pastes a claim they encountered online, selects their platform (X or Reddit) and tone (Calm, Fiery, or Educational), and gets a factual ready to copy and post. Every reply is backed by a verified source from NASA, the IPCC, Skeptical Science, or the IEA to reduce the risk of hallucinated links/info.

Key Features/Implementation:

  1. Platform-dependent replies: X mode generates tweet-length responses under 220 characters; Reddit mode outputs full markdown with bold statistics and citation formatting.
  2. Three tones: Calm (measured and evidence-first), Fiery (sharp, more emotional), Educational (names the misinformation tactic and explains why it's wrong).
  3. Verified sources: Gemini returns a topic key, which the server resolves to a hardcoded, pre-vetted URL. Users never get a broken or hallucinated link.
  4. 'Copy reply' or 'Copy with Source' in one click: Responses and sources are formatted correctly for each platform, making it easier and more efficient for users.
  5. Session history: The last 20 replies are saved locally and persist until the daily limit resets, so users don't accidentally lose a reply.
  6. Strict prompt approval : the backend pre-screens input and rejects anything that isn't a genuine climate claim before it consumes API quota.
  7. IP-based rate limiting: 20 checks per day per user through Upstash Redis, creating a fair balance between usage and token availability

Technologies Used: Frontend: React 18, Vite, Tailwind CSS, built it as a Chrome Extension Manifest V3 popup Backend: Vercel Serverless Functions (Node.js) AI: Google Gemini 2.5 Flash API (free tier) with exponential backoff for rate limit handling Rate Limiting: Upstash Redis (sliding window, 20 requests/day/IP) Deployment: Vercel (API), GitHub (version control) Security: Extension secret token, Content Security Policy, input validation, security response headers

Target Users: Climate-literate people who are active on X and Reddit and want to push back on misinformation but don't have the time or energy to write a sourced response from scratch. This includes science communicators, students, journalists, environmental advocates, and anyone who has ever seen falsehoods go viral and felt powerless to stop it.
