Inspiration
Years ago I misplaced my phone. I knew it was somewhere nearby, because I just had it in my hand. If only I could make it ring, it would be so much easier to find! I didn't have a landline to call it, so I figured there must be some way to do that over the internet. There wasn't, so I made a simple version of CallMyLostPhone.com to do just that!
What it does
CallMyLostPhone.com simply calls your phone when you ask it to. The Amazon Alexa skill simplifies this task even further by calling it for you when you ask.
How I built it
Challenges I ran into
When it comes to making phone calls, there are constant caveats to overcome: Abuse prevention, maintaining the various services necessary to keep things running smoothly, and the hardest part: Trying to remember if you left your phone on silent or not!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Over the years I'm proud to say that CallMyLostPhone.com is the #1 organic search result when searching "call my phone" or something similar.
What I learned
Alexa, and voice interaction generally, is a powerful medium with lots of potential. There are still quite a few pitfalls, but I'm encouraged by it's growth lately.
What's next for Call My Lost Phone
Continue developing and tweaking not only the Alexa skill, but also CallMyLostPhone.com and our other CallSpin powered services. Wake up calls, birthday calls, calls from Santa, and others are just a few of the things we're working on. And I'd love to fully integrate them with the Alexa and other smart home devices!
