Call Me Maybe πŸ€™

Inspiration ⭐️

Sometimes you want to send a message... but you don't always want to be the one to say it 😈. You may not have the time or the energy to tell someone something. Or you might even just want to say something anonymously - say what you want without a worry or trace. This was the main source of inspiration for Call Me Maybe, that and Carly Rae Jepsen 🎀

What It Does πŸ€”

Call Me Maybe utilizes artificial intelligence to create and send a specialized message to the recipient. The only actions required from the user to answer various questions, such as the purpose and details of the call, the recipient's phone number, the length of the call, and the AI's tone and voice. These questions assist the AI in generating a well-constructed message for the recipient πŸ”Š.

How We Built It βš™οΈ

Creating Call Me Maybe required the utilization of several technologies such as React, Python, Firebase, OpenAI API, 11Eleven Labs, and Twilio. Python was used to handle the logic for the backend, while React was used to create the UI in the frontend. Additionally, GPT 4o-mini is the model the AI uses, 11Eleven Labs converts the generated message into speech, and Twilio sends the message to the user via a phone call. Furthermore, Firebase was used for data storage and the Firebase Cloud Functions was used as the pipeline that utilizes AI to call the user. Originally our group used FastAPI but made the switch to cloud functions to host our website

Challenges We Ran Into 🧩

There were a lot of moving parts for this project and It was difficult to integrate all of the services together. Twilio would only allow us to call one singular number originally and would preface the message by indicating it’s a Twilio message πŸ“±.

11Eleven Labs audio files would not save to our database correctly and we almost had to choose between calling with robotic text-to-speech voice messages or calling people with no AI messages but just sound effects.

Besides 11Eleven Labs and Twilio, ChatGPT 4o-mini also gave us problems, as it would sometimes refuse certain inputs and required a lot of prompt configuration.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of πŸ‘

Through the 11Eleven Labs settings and detailed AI prompting, the calls come across as very human in nature. The user customization to include sarcasm, accents, raised voices, and more in the calls paired with the emotional phrasing and various voices makes it possible for someone can mistake this for a human caller.

Additionally, Call Me Maybe can now call any phone number, which greatly expands its functionality! You can now call yourself or your friends or leave voicemails to prank your friends or even wish them a happy birthday. You can convey the information and emotion that you want to share with others but not be forced to chitchat on a phone call afterwards.

What We Learned 🧠

Twilio has the capability to leave voicemails, allowing you to ensure your friend will get the message when they have time ☎️. This cements the idea that our app can save you time and be a convenient option even for your friend.

Through our research, we have realized that phone calls are becoming less popular among the Gen Z demographic. Call Me Maybe can help this generation make more calls. If they are short on time, are feeling phone shy, or maybe their voice hurts, then Call Me Maybe can get the job done for them.

What's Next for Call Me Maybe ⏩

In the future, we'd love to add the ability for people to schedule a call out to someone. Increasing the variety of voices would also allow for more creativity and diversity. More user customization would also come from expanding the tone options, including allowing you to send sad, anxious, embarrassed, etc. messages. We would want to specify the mean option between disgust and anger.
