Inspiration
California Stud Poker was inspired by my love of traditional draw poker and Texas Hold’em. I play poker frequently and I wanted to create a new poker format that still felt familiar to experienced players while introducing enough new mechanics and possibilities to make every hand feel different.
What it does
California Stud Poker introduces a new form of poker that uses the entire 54-card deck, including both Jokers as wild cards.
The game combines elements of stud poker, draw poker, and Texas Hold’em. Players compete through structured betting rounds using visible cards and shared community cards, creating a game in which players have more information than they would in traditional Hold’em while still having to calculate risk, read their opponents, and anticipate the cards that may come next.
Because the Jokers are included, California Stud Poker also introduces several powerful hands that are not normally possible in standard poker. Its hand hierarchy begins with:
- Six of a kind
- Natural royal flush
- Five of a kind
- Wild royal flush
- Straight flush
The remaining hands follow the traditional poker hierarchy.
One of the game’s defining features is the distinction between a natural royal flush and a royal flush completed with a wild card. This preserves the prestige of making a royal flush naturally while still allowing the Jokers to create exciting new outcomes.
California Stud Poker is designed to be easy for poker players to understand, but different enough to create new strategies, probabilities, and gameplay experiences.
How we built it
We built California Stud Poker as a JavaScript-based web application. The front end manages the game interface, card interactions, betting flow, and hand evaluation.
We use Back4App for user registration and account management, allowing players to create accounts and access the game through a persistent user profile.
The project also required us to build custom game logic for the 54-card deck, Joker wild-card behavior, betting rounds, and California Stud Poker’s expanded hand-ranking system.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing a hand hierarchy that made sense both statistically and mechanically.
Adding two Jokers creates hands such as five of a kind, six of a kind, and wild royal flushes. We had to evaluate how frequently these hands could occur and determine where they should appear in the rankings.
However, probability was not the only consideration. The hierarchy also needed to feel intuitive and rewarding to players. Our goal was not simply to create a mathematically correct game, but to create a poker game that was exciting, balanced, and fun to play.
We also had to ensure that the rules were familiar enough for existing poker players to learn quickly without making the game feel like a minor variation of something they had already played.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built the initial version of California Stud Poker in approximately two or three days over a single weekend.
During that time, we developed the game concept, established the rules and hand hierarchy, implemented the core gameplay mechanics, and created a functional web application where people could experience the game.
We are especially proud that we were able to move from an original game idea to a playable product in such a short period of time.
What we learned
The most important thing we learned is that California Stud Poker is genuinely fun to play.
We also learned that designing a card game requires a balance between probability, strategy, clarity, and entertainment.
Building the project gave us a much greater appreciation for the amount of thought that goes into designing a game that feels simple to the player.
What's next for California Stud Poker
Our next goal is to release a Flutter mobile application so more people can easily try California Stud Poker on iOS and Android.
We also plan to continue testing and refining the rules based on real player feedback, improve the multiplayer experience, and build a larger community around the game.
In the longer term, we are interested in licensing California Stud Poker to casinos, cardrooms, online gaming companies, entertainment venues, and other potential business partners.
We are also looking for developers, game designers, poker players, investors, and strategic partners who are interested in supporting the project and helping us bring this new poker format to a wider audience.
