Inspiration
We were interested to see how we could possibly provide an early warning system for flooding in Calgary
What it does
Uses an ml model to predict the volume of the bow river based on snowpack and potential rainfall
How I built it
We took the data fromrivers.alberta.ca and created a dataframe that contains hourly data for nearly 20 years over the summer months to train a model using sklearn. Our front end uses react/typescript to provide a graph with historical data and our predicted river flow.
Challenges I ran into
We struggled with manipulating the data so that it worked
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Learned some new skills including Docker which was cool to see in use and really helped us to get it running on everyones machine
What I learned
Things take more time than you think they will.
What's next for Calgary Flood Prediction
We would like to incorporate weather into the prediction. This would be very helpful to give the user a more accurate flood prediction app.
