Calendar section
The inspiration for this project was our inability to properly manage time; sometimes, we as students tend to over- or underestimate our capabilities when it comes to managing schoolwork. This often results in being unable to maintain a proper work-life balance, either working far too much and damaging one's mental health or staying complacent at work and missing deadlines.
Calendly helps the user manage their time; it accounts for their schedule of classes, commuting time, and sleep. Its main purpose is to force the user to maintain an 8/8/8 work-life balance, aka 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation, and 8 hours of sleep per day.
How we built it We used the Flask framework with Python, which runs multiple algorithms to calculate the user's free time and forces him to not only procrastinate less but also maintain a stable work-life balance so that he does not find himself overworked.
Challenges we ran into This was by no means an easy task because we have varying skill sets; original algorithms had to be written in C and had to be converted into Python with the help of AI, which proved to be troublesome as AI assistance wasn't very effective at this, so we had to spend a lot of time figuring that out. Additionally, the integration of the back end and front end was confusing since we worked separately, and figuring out how we could merge our works together so that everything fit perfectly was a major roadblock. Integrating AI into our project so that it scans a person's schedule and draws it onto the website was challenging because the AI would malfunction at the start, and it would take forever to load responses at first, so we had to wait on it to work for troubleshooting.
We are particularly proud to have been able to integrate a working AI into our project and have its inputs to the backboard.io API to gain access to multiple LLMs, which could convert a rough draft text of the user's schedule into data for our calendar app.
What we learned: AI is quite helpful, but it is also dangerous to use it as a crutch for such scaled projects. Though it is very helpful, relying on it too much will only hurt one in the long run and force one to return to square one for bug fixing.
What's next: Our original plan for this project was to have an AI be able to read an image of the user's schedule and apply that to store data into the calendar schedule; however, this proved to be too ambitious given our skill level and time limit. However, knowing that this website was made with what we thought would be useful for us in mind and what would make us come back to use it in our daily lives, we plan on integrating this feature in the future.
