Inspiration

The idea for Calculus Chronicles: Testifying Integrals was born out of a deep passion for mathematics and a love for coding. From my academic journey, I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and complexity of calculus. This interest, combined with the joy of solving challenging problems through programming, set the foundation for this project. Additionally, my mom has been a constant source of motivation and support throughout my education, encouraging me to pursue my interests and push my boundaries. Her influence played a significant role in driving the creation of this project. My knowledge of integrals, and my math-based Instagram page has also given me the inspiration to show my mathematical knowledge in the face of coding.

What it does

This is a dynamic and engaging platform designed to spark high school students’ interest in integral calculus and contains ten difficult integrals growing in complexity as you go further. The platform offers an interactive quiz with ten meticulously selected integral problems, including some challenging ones from the prestigious MIT Integral Bee, as well as from other elite institutions like IIT JEE Advanced, Harvard, and Stanford. Each problem provides four answer choices, prompting students to apply their calculus skills thoughtfully. If a student chooses an incorrect answer, the platform delivers a thorough step-by-step written solution along with an explanatory video to help them understand the concept. Even for correct responses, detailed written and video solutions are provided, ensuring a deep grasp of the integral in general. This approach caters to various learning styles and reinforces knowledge. By incorporating problems from high-caliber sources, students experience the rigor of advanced calculus and prepare for future academic endeavors. The quiz’s interactive format and immediate feedback make learning both enjoyable and effective. Calculus Chronicles transforms the daunting task of mastering integrals into a captivating experience, building students' confidence and proficiency in mathematics. It demystifies complex integrals and encourages students to explore the depths of calculus with enthusiasm. Beyond testing their knowledge, the platform enhances their understanding through rich multimedia resources. By making integral calculus accessible and engaging, Calculus Chronicles inspires a lasting interest in mathematics. It equips students with the skills they need to excel in calculus and prepares them for the challenges of college-level math and beyond.

How we built it

I built Calculus Chronicles: Testifying Integrals using JavaScript on Code.org. JavaScript helped me create a fun and interactive quiz where students can solve integral problems and get instant feedback. Code.org made it easy to put everything together and focus on making the quiz engaging and educational.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was managing the large amount of code needed for the quiz. Writing and organizing all the JavaScript to handle multiple problems, choices, and solutions took a lot of time and effort. Debugging was especially tough because even a small mistake could cause the whole program to crash. Keeping track of all the features and making sure they worked together smoothly was also a big task. Despite the challenges, we learned a lot about coding and problem-solving along the way. There were a total of 418 lines of code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the biggest accomplishments that I am proud of is that I could show my passion for mathematics, especially the beauty and complexity of integrals. Creating this platform allowed me to share my enthusiasm and make a meaningful impact on how high schoolers, teachers, and even college students approach integral calculus. It's fulfilling to know that we’ve filled a gap since there are very few engaging integral quizzes available online. The positive feedback from users who now find integrals less intimidating and more enjoyable is incredibly rewarding. Seeing how the platform has sparked curiosity and boosted confidence in many students makes all the hard work worthwhile. This project has not only deepened my love for math but also contributed significantly to the educational community by making integral learning accessible and fun.

What we learned

Through this project, I discovered that my existing knowledge in mathematics and coding was already quite advanced, so there was little new learning for me in those areas.

What's next for Calculus Chronicles: Testifying Integrals

Moving forward, I intend to expand my math knowledge in coding by developing more interactive quizzes that offer diverse and challenging problems to enhance students' understanding of calculus. Additionally, I will continue to leverage my Instagram page as a platform to explain and demystify various calculus topics through visual and engaging content. This dual approach aims to cater to different learning styles and foster a deeper appreciation for calculus among a wider audience.
