Inspiration
Our drive to build this application is ourselves. We have experienced Calculus here at Iowa State and know that it can be difficult. So, we wanted to develop something that can be used as a tool alongside other resources at Iowa State to optimize calculus learning.
What it does
It uses a responsive design with an AI trained on Iowa State Mathematics provided by Steve Butler to ensure that students are given the best advantage when it comes to studying and learning Calculus.
How we built it
We built it using the framework Materialize for stylization, JavaScript for our functionality, and HTML for our front end. Alongside these tools, we also used Botpress to not only train our AI but integrate it into our application.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into in development was getting the AI trained on our web app and the Flutter app. This proved very difficult as the documentation for this type of movement was minimal and difficult to interpret.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting a working and trained AI, into our responsive web app.
What we learned
We learned how to combine the tools we had at hand, to deliver a product that not only will help current students, but many students to come.
What's next for Calcly
Calcly has a bright future ahead of it, with an application soon to be launched, hopes to integrate other math curriculums into AI training, and a possible deeper partnership with the Mathematics Department at Iowa State University. All these things spell a bright future for many students in need of a Calculus Buddy.
