Inspiration

For neurodivergent individuals, there is sometimes a tendency to hyper-focus on a task and lose track of time. For these individuals, using alarms makes it easier to refocus attention and remember other tasks that must be completed. However, the alarms on our Clock apps often turn into long, uncoordinated lists that become overwhelming to scroll through (sound familiar?) Though we can set alarms for different days, having them all in the same place is unorganized and gets confusing. We wanted to create an easy-to-use tool that isn’t overwhelming and is accessible for neurodivergent individuals as well as anyone who likes organizing their days with alarms!

What it does

Calarm uses a user-friendly interface to organize alarms and tasks into different days. It's basically a calendar of alarms. It steers away from the general pages-long list of random alarms and offers a way to categorize them and create schedules for each day.

How we built it

We used a lot of trial and error throughout this process. When APIs didn't fully work, we went to a mentor and worked on creating the application on Spring Boot using Java. We used HTML to create a visual aspect of the website. We also used Figma to create prototypes for a potential mobile version of the application.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge was connecting our Java functionality to our HTML code to create a webpage that fully worked with visual components.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're most proud of learning new skills in several different technologies that we hadn't had exposure to before. We're also proud that though we struggled through ideas and switched up a couple of times, we ended up making considerable progress in the project that we did push forward.

What we learned

Through workshops and meetings with mentors, we learned how to search for and utilize APIs online, find new functionalities in HTML, create applications on Spring Boot, and utilize Figma to create prototypes with interactions. One main thing that we also learned was how to set up our own project from scratch, rather than depend on instructions like in several Computer Science classes we've taken.

What's next for Calarm

The next step for Calarm would be to fully connect all the Java and HTML functionalities to fully create a web application. We'd also love to create the real version of the mobile app prototype created on Figma. An additional feature that could be added would be the ability to link to Google Calendar to automatically create alarms for events.
