💭 Inspiration

1 in 5 adults live with a mental illness, and 10 million adults have more than 1 addiction or mental health disorder. Our main inspiration for this has been our own personal experiences with mental health. 25% of people have been faced with making a decision between daily necessities and paying for mental health care. We are passionate about making mental health care accessible for all and reaching out to underserved communities, such as people of color and those who are LGBTQIA+. Our problem statement is: How might we remove the barrier of cost and access to care, and empower all individuals to self-manage their mental health?

📱 What it does

This project is a user-friendly redesign of the DBSA Wellness Tracker mobile application, which allows users to keep track of their mental and physical health. It consists of four main tabs:

  • Home: The home tab is what the user first sees when they open the application. At the top, the user can track their mood for the day and write a short journal entry. They will also be able to view a list of reminders to take medications and record symptoms they have been experiencing. They can also quickly view their past moods and journal entries for the current month on the same tab.
  • Tracker: On the tracker tab, users are able to track their moods, symptoms, and lifestyle. The mood subtab will display a graph showing trends of the user’s recent moods. If the app notices that the user has been depressed several times in the past week, a card will display, showing a link to resources that may help the user. In the tracker tab, the user is also able to share their records with their providers.
  • Community: In the Community tab, users are able to feel safe and accepted in their community based on their specific needs. The filter allows users to quickly find groups and content that is specific to their needs. Users have the option to be paired up with a buddy to feel more supported.
  • Resources: On the resources tab, users will be provided with services like emergency hotlines for emergencies, diagnosis quizzes, and a DBSA Wellness wheel to determine their symptoms. There is also an option for getting involved in the community by volunteering, participating in group sessions, support groups, and more. They will also be directed to education resources for their diagnosis on a regular basis.

⚙️ How we built it

Wellness Tracker was created entirely using Figma. First, we brainstormed. We then looked at reviews for the original DBSA Wellness Tracker application and performed affinity mapping. We prioritized the features we wanted to work on. From there, we created user personas and a user flow. We each sketched our own ideas for the layout and collectively decided on what specific components we liked. We created app visuals, including our application’s color scheme and fonts, and concurrently, we researched and gathered statistics. While some worked on the presentation, others built a low fidelity and, finally, a high fidelity prototype.

🧩 Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was optimizing and prioritizing from the multitude of ideas and tasks. We also found it difficult working in parallel on the same document and dividing tasks accordingly. Given the time constraint, splitting up our time among tasks was a challenge. We realized we were focusing on specific parts for too long and found it difficult to move on to the next task.

🎉 Accomplishments that we're proud of

We can proudly say that we enjoyed working together as a group and connecting with a diverse group of people from both software and design backgrounds. We are proud of the work we accomplished and the product we created in such a short amount of time.

📖 What we learned

This hackathon provided us with the opportunity to learn quickly with the limited timeframe. We all became more familiar with Figma and picked up tips from each other. We received general hackathon, design, and ideation advice from mentors. Our most important piece of advice we received was to prioritize what to work on and devote time to parts that are related to solving our problem, unlike something like a profile page.

🚀 What's next for Wellness Tracker

In terms of prototyping, we would have liked to create more flows and screens for our app. Although we had developers on our team, given the time constraint, we found that it was not feasible to implement our idea. In the future, we want to be able to take our prototype and move forward with development to see our vision come to life.
