Inspiration## Inspiration
Long queues, waiting times, and confusion during peak lunch hours at the G.L. Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management canteen inspired us to build CafeFlow. We wanted to eliminate paper tokens, streamline kitchen operations, and give students a seamless way to order and track their food live.
What it does
CafeFlow is a modern digital canteen token management and live queue tracking system built specifically for campus canteens. It features:
- Instant Token Generation: Students can choose food categories (Beverages, Fast Food, Meals), place orders, and receive a digital token slip with a 4-digit verification PIN.
- Live Queue Tracking: Real-time tracking of order states (Order Placed, Cooking in Kitchen, Ready for Pickup, Completed) with a live HH:MM:SS countdown and countdown timers.
- Kitchen Display System (KDS): A dedicated staff dashboard for canteen operators to manage active orders, update preparation statuses, ring pickup alerts, and control menu stock in real-time.
How we built it
- Frontend: Built with React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a responsive, student-friendly, and modern UI featuring official G.L. Bajaj branding.
- State & Logic: Utilizes local storage and React context to sync live token updates seamlessly between the student ordering flow and the staff dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
- Synchronizing real-time queue updates smoothly across different views without a heavy backend setup.
- Designing a dual-counter architecture (Counter 1 for Beverages/Snacks and Counter 2 for Meals) that mirrors actual campus canteen operations.
What we learned
We gained deep insights into building responsive, production-ready campus utility web apps and optimizing user workflows for high-stress retail/cafeteria environments.
