Inspiration
We love cafe on the ave, especially their coffee. However, they do not have a website and delivery services must go through a third party (ex. Doordash).
What it does
We created a simple frontend that allows users to create accounts and view the menu. The backend accepts requests and communicates with our database. Currently, users can create accounts, log in with those accounts, and view the menu.
How I built it
My teammate Lauren worked on writing native javascript code, html, and css on the frontend. I worked on a node.js backend and our sqlite database.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into a lot of challenges on the frontend. Originally, I wanted to use React.js, however we decided to write native javascript instead as a better learning experience (but probably not the best use of time overall). We wanted to accomplish so many more things but there was not time. First, I wanted the backend to salt and hash user passwords to prevent storing them in plain text. Second, we wanted to create an order system that would allow users that are signed in to create orders and select items on the menu. Third, I wanted to have employee accounts be able to view current orders. Last, we created a whole review system where users could leave reviews about the restaurant or browse other reviews, but there is not enough time to get it working.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Users can successfully create persistent accounts and sign in to their accounts, and they can view a subset of the menu. What we have actually works.
What I learned
Re-familiarized ourselves with 3 tier architecture (frontend, backend, db), javascript, node.js, html and css. The project challenged us to learn fast and get out there and make something. Don't use gitlab over github for hackathon projects because now we don't have a link to share the repo without requiring signing in.
What's next for Cafe on the Ave Scheduler
Password salt and hashing. Users who are logged in can create orders by selecting items on the menu. Employee accounts can view orders. Users who are logged in can write reviews. Any user can read through different reviews for the restaurant. Get images for each item on the menu.
