Inspiration
I often see people set goals and then forget about it because in order to achieve anything significant, you have to keep working on it for a period of time, and it becomes really hard to follow through and to persist when you don't have clear steps to follow, when you often find yourself thinking about what should I do today? I observed this problem with myself and also with others. And I think that if you have clearly defined steps, specific steps, it becomes much easier to stick with the goal.
What it does
It is a tool that takes your goal and deadline as an input, asks any clarifying questions, and then breaks down your goal into milestones and then ultimately into tasks you need to complete each day in order to achieve the goal. It doesn't just create a one-time goal, but every day you can mark the tasks you have completed as done and leave the undone tasks and the tool will replan according to that. It will also replan according to any new information as it comes in. So it stays with you along your journey.
How we built it
I built it with agentic coding and the skills provided by the Devpost hackathon were extremely helpful as they helped me come up with the idea, scope it, and then build it.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was getting the AI to make plans I could trust. AI models don't always follow rules, and sometimes a reply would put more work on a day than I had hours for, or schedule a task after the deadline. I solved this with one rule: the AI proposes, the backend checks. Every plan goes through code checks before it's saved: every task needs a clear done criterion, a time estimate and a reason, and no day can go over your daily hours. If a plan fails, the app asks the AI once more, then shows a calm "planning failed, retry" message instead of saving a broken plan.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- It's more than a one-time plan generator. Cadence works on a daily loop: you tick off tasks, review your day, and it replans around what you actually did.
- It asks clarifying questions first, turns a vague goal into a specific one, and checks whether the goal is realistic before you commit.
- It can plan up to three goals together, so they share your daily hours instead of competing for them.
- Your progress is saved locally, and the whole app starts with one command.
- I went from an idea to a working app that I would actually use myself.
What we learned
I learned planning before building makes a huge difference especially when an agent can handle implementation so well, I need to spend a good amount of time in making decisions on what to build.
