Inspiration
We were trying to think about what MDL-Man might need in his everyday life, which is difficult because the man seems to have it all. Then we realized: he has no sidekick! Every great hero has a sidekick. But what kind of sidekick could possibly follow in his footsteps? What could be better than a voice-automated quadcopter?
Our design was visually inspired by the MDL logo and those fancy drones we’ve seen flying around on YouTube.
What it does
CADDIE-COPTER is MDL Man's all-in-one, three-in-one personal assistant. It can fly and retrieve objects, project images onto a retractable screen, and sense the temperatures of 3D printing—all designed to support MDL Man in his daily heroics.
How we built it
First, we brainstormed extensively, then brainstormed some more. After that, we created sketches and used CAD to bring the design to life. Finally, we 3D printed the prototype.
Challenges we ran into
Printing was very challenging—some pieces were too small, adhering to the constraints was difficult, and the numerous moving parts made assembly quite complex. Coming up with the idea in the first place was also challenging because it was such an open-ended problem. We spent hours going back and forth, debating what we wanted to build and which features to include.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're really proud of how we incorporated the MDL logo into the shape of the design and the overall creativity we brought to this project.
What we learned
Time management is really important: we wish we had allocated more time to practice our presentation.
What's next for CADDIE-COPTER
Adding a clip attachment for CADDIE-COPTER to make it more convenient for MDL-Man (we would place it on the back) and figuring out where to position the rotary motors to power the whole thing (we would attach them to the bottom of each of the blades).
