Inspiration
Over the last few years, commercial computer-aided design (CAD) software has shifted heavily toward recurring monthly SaaS subscription models. For independent drafters, architectural studios, and mechanical engineers, this created compounding overhead and software compatibility confusion across different Windows environments.
We wanted to build an open, accessible technical benchmark and resource platform where designers can quickly verify minimum hardware specifications, learn essential 2D/3D drafting commands, and evaluate the true long-term ROI of software licensing.
What it does
The CAD Benchmark & Software Compatibility Engine serves as a practical workstation and drafting reference:
- Hardware & GPU Benchmarking: Breaks down real-world system requirements (CPU clock speed, RAM allocation, DirectX 12 GPU requirements) needed to run modern engineering software smoothly.
- Step-by-Step Command Walkthroughs: Provides beginner and intermediate drafters with streamlined tutorials, such as our foundational guide on How to Use AutoCAD: 5 Essential Steps to Start Drawing Fast.
- Licensing Cost Modeling: Compares recurring SaaS overhead against perpetual (single-payment) retail desktop licenses available through CDRBStores.
How we built it
- Core Architecture: Built on a custom PHP and WordPress framework with clean semantic HTML5 markup.
- Styling & Presentation: Responsive CSS3 architecture engineered to render lightweight documentation without bloat.
- Data Layer: MySQL and schema-driven structured JSON-LD data for maximum discoverability.
What's next
We are expanding the engine to include deeper benchmark comparisons for 3D architectural modeling (Revit, Chief Architect, Lumion) and mechanical engineering suites (SolidWorks), helping engineers optimize both workstation hardware and software licensing overhead.
