Do you ever find yourself thinking "I wish I knew more about the world!" Byte Sized Facts is a browser extension where you can learn facts about a topic of your choice each time you open a new tab.

Inspiration

We love learning little facts throughout the day, but the existing "daily fact" calendars and phone widgets offer little to no customization. It's time we change that!

What it does

This browser extension allows users to choose areas of interest including "Animals," "Tufts Facts," "Alice in Wonderland," and so much more. Every time you open a new browser, you will be presented with a new random fact based on your preferences, which you can change at any time using the "Filter My Facts" button.

How we built it

React, Nodejs, Beautifulsoup, Postman, Requests, CSS. Consulted ChatGPT

Challenges we ran into

Packages all conflicted. Learning how to do web scraping. Balancing number of facts between categories. Finding correct sources of facts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We web scraped fun facts about Tufts and Alice in Wonderland. Also sent API requests to obtain our history facts. Got our Chrome extension to finally work! We love our little cookie logo.

What we learned

We learned a lot of fun facts. Did you know 1/4 of the bones in your body are in your feet?

What's next for Byte Sized Facts

Incorporate images related to the facts, and add more categories and facts so you never run out of knowledge.
