Inspiration

This project was inspired by the very-familiar plight of vegetarian international students in regard to variety and accessibility of good food options. One of our team members (who shall remain anonymous) has personally lost a 'few' kilograms over the last four months simply because of the non-availability of proper, diverse vegetarian meal options. Ironically, two members of our team had Bánh mì sandwiches for dinner as we worked on this, while the lone warrior in our story had a single slice of pizza for the third meal running.

What it does

The current functionality of Byte Bites transforms basic ingredients into a feast of delectable dishes. Accepting a list of available ingredients, the user is given a list of recipes for potential meal/snack options- with an emphasis placed on minimizing the number of additional ingredients needed to make the recipe work. Each recipe includes a list of ingredients with the required quantities, alongside detailed preparation instructions.

How we built it

In the ideation phase, we took into account the myriad of challenges that face international students. Post ideation, we integrated the Spoonacular API using Python and Flask in the Jinja engine, also making using major use of HTML and CSS to ensure a certain degree of visual appeal was maintained.

Challenges we ran into

Ignorance. At our first hackathon, we were slow off the blocks and did not know how to begin implementing parts of the code. However, once we caught wind of what we were supposed to do, there was no turning back.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building something truly functional at our very first hackathon.

What we learned

Some very important lessons in version control.

What's next for Byte Bites

The primal functionality targeted towards vegetarian users can be expanded to include a variety of dietary restrictions (vegan, lactose intolerant, etc.) and diet types. The comprehensive data and flexible code leaves the door open to a multitude of features, including but not limited to, searching for food items according to nutrients, meal planning and at a base level- restaurant mapping.
