Inspiration
Living in a shared room or hostel often means waking up at different times. But traditional alarms disturb everyone, not just the person who set it. I wanted to create a personal wake-up solution that’s silent for others but effective for the user.
What it does
SilentWake is a smart, non-intrusive alarm system that: Uses vibration (like a phone or wearable) Or a directional light flash (only visible to one person) Or a silent speaker using bone conduction (future upgrade idea) To gently wake only the target user — without disturbing roommates, friends, or family.
How we built it
As a solo participant without coding experience, I focused on: Designing the concept with use cases Exploring possible tools: wearables, mobile app alarms, and smart lights Learning about vibration motors, Bluetooth triggers, and light-based alerts
Challenges we ran into
Making sure the system wakes only the user reliably Balancing tech feasibility with simplicity (especially for solo users without hardware) Keeping cost low for students or hostel users
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Came up with a creative solution to a real-world problem — waking up without disturbing others
- Built and pitched this idea solo, with zero coding experience
- Learned how to present a project clearly for a hackathon submission
- Explored how vibration, light, and silent sound tech can help improve everyday life
- Gained confidence to participate in tech events and pitch my own ideas
What we learned
Learned about user-centered design for shared spaces Explored how non-sound alerts (light, touch) work in real-world tech Gained confidence in pitching a product idea even without building a full prototype
What's next for BuzzMeOnly
Add a wearable band that gently vibrates to wake you up Create a mobile app that connects with a smart lamp or fitness band Use AI to detect user’s sleep cycle for gentle waking
