Inspiration

Due to COVID-19, the transition from traditional schooling to online schooling was very tough on students of all age. We were personally affected by this as first-year college students, and we observed the impact of online learning on our younger siblings. Therefore, we were inspired to improve this structure, as it may be the future of learning from here on out.

What it does

So, we decided to create an interactive virtual Teaching Assistant named Buzz, inspired by our very own Georgia Tech mascot! Our aim for this BuzzBot is to make online learning more social, interactive, and personal to students, currently focusing on younger children.

How we built it

during the short amount of time given to us through this hackathon, we were able to create a chatbot that could take in user input and interact with the kids as they were learning. This chatbot is specifically programmed to answer math related questions. By having a personal interaction during class, we could keep each student well accounted for. We decided that python would be the best programming language to use because in the future, this high level programming language could have access to multiple libraries. In our program, we imported chatterbot using pip and created multiple lists of responses that the chatbot would be capable of producing. In the end, we implemented a simple try/except conditional loop to keep our chatbot running.

Challenges we ran into

Our limited programming experience and distant interactions with teammates made it harder to make our ideas into reality. We had to brainstorm more to fit our ideas into the scope of our abilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to finish and have a tangible product that could take in user input and respond accordingly.

What we learned

We learned how to use GitHub and work with others. We also learned some of the foundational concepts of AI and we plan to use that in our future endeavors.

What's next for BuzzBot

We would like to add interactive effects and add audio and motion the chatbot. We can utilize and employ ML and AI, similar to Siri and Alexa. We want to apply this throughout the education system and expand into various subjects. We want to implement it into Zoom, BlueJeans, and other video calling/online learning platforms.
