Inspiration
Managing events for Greek life organizations can be complicated, with disorganized guest lists, fragmented communication, and inconsistent ticketing methods. Inspired by the need for a seamless event management solution tailored to fraternities and sororities, we created BuyIn. The goal is to streamline how organizations plan events, invite members and other chapters, and manage attendance while ensuring smooth coordination and compliance with risk policies.
What it does
BuyIn is a social event platform designed for Greek organizations. It offers full chapter management, allowing users to organize members into subgroups like pledge classes, alumni, etc. Organizations can invite other chapters to events and select specific members or subgroups to attend. Each attendee receives a digital ticket through Apple or Google Wallet, which can be redeemed with a quick tap at the door. The platform also includes guest list management, real-time attendance tracking, and built-in risk management tools to ensure safe and well-organized events.
How we built it
We built BuyIn using React for the web interface and Expo/React Native for cross-platform mobile functionality. The backend is powered by Supabase, providing secure authentication, real-time database management, and smooth data synchronization. For ticketing, we integrated Apple Wallet and Google Wallet APIs, enabling attendees to receive digital passes that can be redeemed with a tap at event entrances. This tech stack ensures the platform is scalable, user-friendly, and responsive across both mobile and web environments.
Challenges we ran into
One of the key challenges was managing complex user roles and permissions to allow flexibility in how chapters collaborate and control attendance. Integrating the ticketing system across both Apple and Google Wallets presented technical hurdles, as did developing risk management features that align with various organizational policies. Ensuring real-time data synchronization during events, especially with many attendees, also required careful backend optimization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a platform that simplifies event management for Greek organizations while making collaboration between chapters more intuitive. The integration of wallet-based tickets ensures a smooth entry experience, and our risk management tools provide essential support for organizations hosting large events. We’re proud of the seamless interaction between the frontend, backend, and ticketing systems, all working together to create a polished product.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we gained valuable experience with API integrations, particularly with Apple and Google Wallets. We also deepened our understanding of multi-level permissions and the importance of designing platforms that balance flexibility with ease of use. Building tools that meet the needs of both event organizers and attendees required us to iterate and refine our approach to achieve a seamless experience.
What's next for BuyIn: Greek Organization Social Event Platform
Moving forward, we plan to expand BuyIn beyond Greek life to serve other university clubs and organizations. We aim to redesign our mobile app for better on-the-go event management and introduce analytics dashboards to provide insights into attendance trends and event success. Additional features, such as incident reporting and emergency alerts, will enhance our risk management tools, ensuring BuyIn remains a valuable resource for safe, well-organized events.
