We each had never competed in a datathon or a hackathon. When reviewing the challenges we decided to challenge ourselves as best we could so, it was agreed to attempt the intermediate track.
Our code pulls information from JourneyNorth and compiles data found through the EPA to compare data from the migratory patterns of monarch butterflies.
We utilized a combination of our own personal knowledge, the large language model API provided by Dr. Gutierrez and ChatGPT.
The requirement to use the LLM API was our major roadblock. For the majority of our project time we were unable to move forward with statistical analysis because of the inconsistency we were seeing with the API.
We successfully completed the challenge but ran out of time to properly compose the final deliverable. We individually learned how to utilize new aspects of programming and seeing the effects of hard work.
Data science is a tricky but rewarding endeavor and we all had an enormous amount of fun competing.
What's next for Butterflys and Where They Have Gone, we will be reflecting on our performance this weekend to better prepare for the next one.
