Inspiration

Busy Bites is inspired by the challenges faced by busy BCIT students who struggle to find time for cooking or affordable delivery options in their packed schedules. Our team found a solution for busy students to say goodbye to fast food and hello to nutritious homemade meals. We want to make sure no student goes hungry or sacrifices health for convenience!

What it does

Busy Bites connects BCIT students with fellow students or individuals near campus who are willing to share their healthy cooking. Through the app, students gain access to a map that display details such as nearby cooks, menu offerings, and meal availability. Upon reservation, the app will notify students of the approximate pick-up time. Busy Bites alleviates the burden of cooking for students, offering BCIT students one Free meal daily to tackle affordability concerns and ensure each student receives a nutritious meal. Additionally, we provide gift cards and fresh vegetables for redemption as tokens of appreciation for generous individuals who offer free meals!

How we built it

The tech stack that we use for this project was Typescript, React, Next.js, Leaflet Maps, Figma

Challenges we ran into

  • Shaping things in CSS into how we want it to look like
  • Making Leaflet Map work with Next.js. There was an prerendering error.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Coming up with an innovative way to help students like us who are busy but want to eat healthy.

What we learned

Our findings indicate that a considerable proportion of students engage in the consumption of unhealthy foods.

What's next for Busy Bites

  • Making a desktop version for our app.
  • Partnering with local businesses for more diverse meal options.
