Inspiration
Our team quickly bonded over the overwhelming feeling of imposter syndrome as women in the tech space. We have all second-guessed ourselves and fallen victim to comparison to others around us. In order to help grow personal confidence, we wanted to build a positive space to visualize our individual journeys. Busy Bee was born to show yourself and others that everything is a step in the right direction.
What it does
Busy-Bee is a personal growth tracker that helps the user to log their personal and work-related skills, build positive habits, and see their progress over time. It uses a colorful user interface and built-in AI to make tracking habits and self-reflection effortless.
How we built it
We started with wireframes drafted using Claude Code, then built the front end in HTML and back-end JavaScript. The AI features run through the Gemini API, powering the app’s assistance on your journey. We split the work by component to develop in parallel and used Git for version control and flow management.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part of developing Busy Bee was getting all of our thoughts into a singular cohesive idea. Technically, wiring the back end to the front end, managing git conflicts and errors, and coordinating between team members were all especially difficult under a strict time limit. Each obstacle we faced, we kept reminding ourselves that every step was a micro-win and an improvement on our skills, demonstrating just how applicable and important this app concept is.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In all aspects, Busy Bee is something that we are extremely proud of. From a strong and cohesive concept to creating an interactive dashboard, we did an excellent job with our coordination as a team to use each of our individual skills to our advantage as a whole.
What we learned
The biggest lesson had little to do with the actual coding of Busy Bee; instead, we learned about the importance of celebrating the small wins as a team. Not only as a function within our app, but it also played an important role in creating a fun and positive team dynamic, which demonstrated the importance of soft skills. We set out to build a product that helped others recognize their progress, and ended up practicing that ourselves along the way.
What's next for Busy Bee
For the next steps in Busy Bee, we would love to further integrate AI to eliminate the unknowns and challenges associated with learning new skills. By generating a user's starting point and road maps for their projects, many of the doubts regarding how to learn new skills can be eliminated.
