Inspiration
We decided to participate in our very first hackathon, mainly to gain more experience in our field of course. We chose this topic particularly as we believe it will help local businesses the recognition they deserve. We are inspired by the work these small businesses put in and wanted to play our part in helping towards this projects goal. Not to mention, the prizes have also been a great inspiration, to get the project done.
What it does
This project creates a dashboard from the data collected by us. The data includes the business name, website, address, type, contact information, and a brief description about the business. We have a navigation bar, in which we can search of businesses in a certain region, and all their records will be pulled out.
How we built it
Our project is a web based dashboard that will allow them to access information about many agriculture-based businesses and greenhouses located around Chatham-Kent down to Windsor-Essex and including Leamington.
Using HTML, CSS, JavaScrip, and Bootstrap we were able to create simple dashboard. We found codes on bootstrap, which we changed according to our liking, eg, making the navigation bar, and the tale with rows and columns. We have a search bar to show businesses according to area searched. We used tag for hyperlinks. And we used google maps to collect data about businesses in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent, which we stored in our table. Using the data in the table we were able to sort through it.
Challenges we ran into
We found it difficult to make the table sort work. It does not do what we wished for it to do. We have a side bar in which we can do the same task as the navigation bar, also does not work, as we cannot click on the buttons.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very happy to have managed to make a good-looking website. The main issue was for us was be able to host the website. Which with much difficulty we were able to accomplish. We are also very proud of the layout design we have for the dashboard, the colors and how we presented the work.
What we learned
We learnt to code HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in more detail. With the help of bootstrap, we were able to gain more knowledge about how tables, side bar button, and links are created and used while making websites. And finally we managed to understand what exactly a dashboard is, and how it’s used and coded.
What's next for Business Directory
We wish to have more data entries, that include local business over a large geographical area. And to design the website better, with more features that include locations to me shown on maps and linking our buttons in the sidebar to other dashboards which contain new data. We would also like to improve side bar functionality for filtering, as it does not work yet, and search bar to search for every field not just the region. And fix the visibility of the columns, so the data is presented neatly.
