Inspiration
Personal vehicle use accounts for nearly one fifth of US carbon emissions. Buses are not widely used in many cities and stops are often simple and not maintained.
What it does
We want to build communities around bus stops by providing essential services to the community. This will empower disadvantages communities and encourage use of public transit. By providing services, we encourage communities to see themselves as stakeholders in public transit systems.
How we built it
Initial prototype using Google Pages and Google Forms. Information gathering by posting a call to action at a local bus stop.
Challenges we ran into
We needed to learn more about the needs of the community, which is why we started with an information gathering step.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing a community-driven approach to public transit that gives people a sense of ownership of their local infrastructure.
What we learned
We learned a lot about urban resilience and the intersection of income, mobility and resilience. We learned to overcome our mental model of public spaces as drab, utilitarian and depressing and began to see them as vital points of connection for the community.
What's next for Bus Stations for People
We will continue to gather survey information on the needs of the community.
