Budget, Cost, Business Aspects
The Philadelphia School District Transportation Department oversees transportation logistics for over 42,000 students in the Philadelphia area. Every day about 10 routes are not covered, which means some drivers have to work double shifts and hundreds of students arrive at school up to two hours late. With an estimated $38 million deficit in their budget next year, the Transportation Department is in need of a more efficient system.
For our project, we are planning to use decision models and optimization processes to find the optimal route algorithm. We will analyze data on school hours, bell times, student locations and bus capacity to define our variables and constraints. Our proposed solution will help all children arrive at school on time and allow the Philadelphia school district to save thousands of dollars in operational costs.
