Inspiration
I suck at marketing and need to get in shape (see video!). So I'm building an app to get me in shape and force me to put myself out into the world.
What it does
Tracks your exercise, gamifies the experience, and let's you share your journey to social media.
How I built it
Mostly Google Antigravity and bashing my head on the keyboard.
Challenges I ran into
Integrating Godot; putting my face on the internet. React Native and Godot didn't lead to a nice developer experience across iOS and Android - it might have been better to build two native apps. I also drastically underestimated the complexity and scope.
"We do these things not because they are easy, but because we thought they were going to be easy"
It took a lot of time to build everything, and I'm lucky that I managed to get it published before the deadline - I guess aiming for iOS and Android was both scope creep and a hedge. Translating it to 20 languages maybe wasn't necessary for V1.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Getting Godot and React Native to work together! It means that you have a nice UI for the normal app stuff (forms, onboarding, settings), access to devices (e.g. camera and pose detection), and a real game experience. Mashing together a game and exercise seems like a great idea to me.
What I learned
Everything is a mental game. It took some work and some luck to get it finished in time. Android went through the review process first, and the iOS review seems like it will take longer. I may be paranoid, but I think they are punishing me for submitting it with a silly mistake! I still really struggle with marketing, but have at least put my face on TikTok and survived. Now I plan to put my belly on TikTok (the app creates videos of the exercise). Wish me luck.
What's next for Burpee Wrangler 3000
I want to add some polish around the organisation of the settings screen and leaderboard. The real work now is marketing it. I'd also like to build out more of the game component - maybe you can control the wrangler character and walk around the ranch, and see the burpees teleporting out of the rover into the padock. There could be something more around the escape mechanic (burpees escape if you don't keep wrangling) - a cut scene of them destroying the fence or hopping over it.
