🍔 Burger Tycoon Deluxe!

Build the ultimate burger factory and make huge amounts of cash!

A Fully Featured World Load/Save System The player's progress is saved using a bespoke save system which allows the player to come back and continue with the factory they were building. This took a big chunk of the dev time and it's a fully featured system that is flexible enough to carry forward into future worlds.

User Friendly & Aimed at a Young Audience The interactions are simple in this game and is easy to pick up and play. Inspired by the most popular Tycoon style games on Roblox, this game aims to be suited to a similar audience.

Unlocking System The player builds up the world by a sequence of unlockable elements which then allow the player to generate more cash. Alongside this, the player can use cash to unlock decorations and features in the factory.

Upgrading & Levelling Up System The elements in the game can be progressively upgraded for cash, such as the workers can be upgraded to increase their speed. The storage units can be upgraded to store more items and the food server can become quicker at serving. Each help to generate more cash, quicker for the player.

Modular Framework Underneath this world a lot of work as gone into making the elements modular and reusable. Such as the unlockable buttons that build the world up as the player progresses, the conveyor belts that can be linked to storage units. The world save and load system that can save and restore the world and player's progress.

🌎 Meta Horizon Worlds

Created specifically for the Meta Horizon Worlds Mobile competition made for mobile, web & VR - this world was created using the desktop editor. GenAI was extensively used for aiding the scripting, the sound effects and various graphical assets.

💡 Inspiration

What inspired you to create this world? What other worlds or media influenced your creative direction?

A lot of inspiration has been taken from playing and seeing my children play Roblox games. There's definitely a set of key factors in those games that really appeal to that audience and the mechanics have been steadily evolving over time. It's good to keep on top of those trends and I wanted to make a game that uses a lot of key fundamentals from those games, but for Meta Horizon Worlds.

🛠️ How I Built It

What were the key tools and processes you used to create the world? If this is a team world, who contributed and how did they contribute?

The main tool was the Meta Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor. I also made my own assets in blender, but used gen AI for inspiration and help with code solutions.

I created the logic in typescript as well as modelling and texturing the assets involved.

🚧 Challenges

What were the biggest difficulties you encountered, and how did you overcome or work around them?

It was a steep learning curve, especially using typescript and how the editor uses assets within assets. I'm largely from a Unity background, so some things were very familiar, while other elements took time to learn and be proficient enough to create the idea.

Therefore the biggest challenge was to create the game within the time I had and making the systems underneath. The save and load system specifically was a challenge in order to restore the worlds at any location in the street. Dealing with nested assets was also particularly challenging within the editor and this game heavily relied on that.

🏆 Accomplishments

Which parts of your world, or your building process, are you most proud of?

However, the part I'm most proud of was when there was a turning point. Nearing the end, processes started to click, things got quicker to make and the game started to be fun. I'd say the greatest accomplishment would be creating this game was the bespoke load and save system, as well as some seemly simple, yet tricky elements such as UI elements showing locally around the player and the animation system for the conveyor belts.

🚀 Next Steps

How are you going to keep improving the world? What would you like to add if you have more time?

Time was limited for this competition, however there is so much more I have planned for this project. These include:

  • Extra floors for expansion, so the factory can have multiple levels
  • More worker and conveyor belt upgrades
  • Gourmet burgers (rare, epic & legendary) which can be obtained via a recipe shop, then traded with other players
  • A tower climb
  • Rebirthing system and benefits (so rebirthing your factory allows for further expansion)
  • Themes where you burgers can be modified in order to be sold for more money.
  • The graphics currently are very basic, but given more time more polish can be added and the game graphics can be vastly improved

Thank you for playing - Happy Burgering!
