Inspiration
Bunting is inspired by cozy life simulation games that focus on routine, comfort, and emotional attachment rather than challenge or competition. The idea came from wanting to explore how a player could feel grounded in a world not through winning or optimizing systems, but through repeated small actions that slowly shape their environment and relationships.
What it does
The game lets the player live as a bird-like character on a small alien planet, building a life through exploration, gathering, crafting, and relationships. Players move between a handful of distinct locations, collect resources, and return home to gradually shape their space, routines, and connections over time.
How we built it
The project was designed by first defining a simple core loop—leave home, explore, gather, return, and build—and then layering systems that reinforce that rhythm. Mechanics like movement, interaction, crafting, and relationship progression were built to directly feed back into visible changes in the world, especially the player’s home space and character connections.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge was scope control, as the world naturally expanded into many possible systems and directions. Another challenge was maintaining emotional clarity without relying on difficulty or pressure-based progression. It required careful refinement to keep everything aligned with a calm, readable player experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The core loop is consistent and clearly expressed across all systems, and progression is visible directly in the environment rather than hidden in abstract menus. The world maintains a cohesive tone across gameplay, visuals, and interaction design, creating a strong sense of identity and atmosphere.
What we learned
We learned the importance of designing systems that reinforce a single emotional rhythm rather than competing for attention. We also learned how much clarity improves when progression is made physical and visible in the world instead of being represented through numbers or layered mechanics.
What's next for Bunting
Future development would expand the density and variety of the world, adding more creatures, locations, and subtle narrative layers tied to the planet’s history. Systems like relationships, ecology, and exploration would deepen over time, while preserving the core focus on calm, repeatable life-building.
