🎯 Inspiration
We've all been there. You're hungry, you're with friends, and no one can decide where to eat.
You scroll endlessly, debate dietary restrictions, worry about budgets, and lose 30+ minutes just trying to agree on one restaurant.
We realized we weren’t alone — and that's where the idea for BunqEats was born.
Our goal: create an app that actually understands you — your tastes, your budget, your vibe — and helps you and your friends decide where to eat, quickly and smartly.
🛠️ How We Built It
We built BunqEats on top of the bunq ecosystem, leveraging users’ past transaction data to recommend personalized restaurant options.
We added a smart chatbot that lets you ask questions like “What should I eat tonight?” and built a group feature called Split & Snack, which analyzes everyone’s preferences (including allergies, dietary tags, and budgets) to find the best places for the whole group.
The backend handles preference matching and context awareness, while the frontend uses bunq-style UI for a seamless experience.
📚 What We Learned
- How to use AI to make real-time, personalized recommendations
- How to merge financial data, food discovery, and social planning
- The value of keeping UX clean and intuitive even under time pressure
⚠️ Challenges
- None of us come from a software or AI background — we had to learn fast
- We had limited time, so we focused on building a strong demo with hardcoded examples and smooth UI
- Balancing personalization with simplicity was harder than expected — but totally worth it
BunqEats is the assistant we wish we had every Friday night.
We built it for us — and for anyone who's ever said "I don't know, what do you want to eat?"
