(i) Project Description: We created the Bunny Math Pyxel Game for the 5C Hackathon to make math less intimidating and more approachable for kids. By doing this, we hope to help kids feel less stressed about math and, in turn, foster more significant relationships with their peers and teachers regarding math. The Project Track that we approached was the Maker Track. The Overlays that apply to our project is the Best Beginner. We used Python and the retro game plugin Pyxel, which utilizes object-oriented programming. An ethical concern of our game is the competitive element of the game. This can make kids feel frustrated; however, we have cautiously worked to ensure that the game is as welcoming and rewarding as possible as our main goal is to help kids learn math.
(ii) Purpose: The problem that we are tackling with our project is the intimidation that math gives and how it makes kids feel “stupid” and give up on the subject. We hope to prevent this from happening and to help kids develop a better relationship with mathematics and their teachers. This program helps kids and trains them with mental calculations. The future of our project is implementing different levels of difficulty in regards to age range to make it more accessible and to skill level for progression.
(iii) How it works: You’re a bunny, and you race with other bunnies that are time-trial rivals. You have to beat them and get to the carrot at the finish line by clicking on the correct solution to the arithmetic question!
