The name BunkBed originates in the interconnectedness between shelters and their clients for which we strive. A major problem in the status quo is the lack of an elegant utility which shelters can use to share information about the homeless population and resource availability. BunkBed is an innovative solution to end homelessness through optimization of multi-faceted communication.

Initially, area shelters create profiles, detailing contact information, available space, and the demographics they target. Then, homeless individuals can create their own profiles with specifics about the type of aid they need and personal information. Then, BunkBed matches individuals with open shelters that reflect the needs of each homeless person.

Another important facet of BunkBed is its mobile utility. Many homeless people do not have smartphones, so a typical application is rendered fairly useless. However, an SMS-based “soft app” allows individuals to locate shelters and reserve a bed for the night, as well as providing information about programs (child care, medical aid, permanent housing, and drug rehabilitation).

The final aspect of BunkBed is its data visualization and compilation. As more homeless individuals register, a larger body of data is collected, which is subsequently displayed in multiple formats, including age, race, and disability breakdowns. With this information, shelters and even governments can formulate targeted solutions to address high-risk individuals and prevent chronic homelessness.
