Bunifu Go

A school transport app for schools to enhance safety, efficiency, and communication. With real‑time GPS tracking using Google maps, parents and administrators get live visibility into bus routes.

Inspiration

While providing ERP's for schools, we kept hearing complaints from school administrators that their school transport was disorganized and chaotic. We also learnt that parents regularly complained about school transport due to lack of updates as to whereabouts of where the bus is. The bus assistants phones will be buzzing regularly from concerned parents wanting to know the status of their child's commute and this will make their work overwhelming. It is then that we built Bunifu Go to solve these problems.

What it does

We built two apps, one for the parent and another for the bus assistants that works with a web backend. The parent app is used by the parents to receive notifications when the child boards or alights, during a live trip, a parent can track the school bus in real time hence getting full visibility, the parent can also set child's availability. The bus assistant is able to know which student is to be picked where while the school admin is able to view the bus location during a live trip. He can also see the pick up and drop off locations for each child. For safety, we are able to show the administrator the vehicle speed.

How we built it

We used React for the backend, for map rendering, we used Google maps API, then for the apps Flutter and Kotlin for both Android and IOS. We added NFC technology with utilizes NFC enabled keyfobs/cards to identify students.

Challenges we ran into

Data management was a huge challenge especially GPS data initially as we had built a custom engine to manage that. The hardware costs were and are still expensive especially the NFC enabled phones.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

So far, we serve over 5,000 parents, 200 bus assists and a number of schools.

What we learned

  • That building a world class enterprise software is a process and a journey.
  • That parents really care about the safety of their children during commute and that our job is to provide them the best possible experience -That schools can improve their processes by adopting new technologies ## What's next for Bunifu Go We will now focus on improving the product with features such as route optimization. Possibly see how AI can help in this. We also want to onboard third party school transport providers.
