Problem Statement
Indonesia is the second largest food waste producer in the world with around 23-48 million tons of food waste per year which is equivalent to the portion of food for 61-125 million people per year. The reason why Indonesia's food waste production rate is very high is that many food merchants leaving food unsold after their closing hour. Driven by our concern about these large amounts of food waste, we are building an application that could reduce food waste by helping FnB businesses sell last-minute food at a much lower price. Our vision is to enable food merchants with this application so that they could make more sales and deliver food at the best price to their customers. This initiative is also aligned with the SDGs number 2 (zero hunger) and number 12 (responsible consumption and production).
Our Solution
We created a mobile application to reduce food waste by helping FnB businesses sell last minute foods at a much lower price. We prototyped the UI of this application using Figma. This project has the potential to scale with not so much work left to do until the MVP is delivered to our users. Possible stacks to make this prototype come into life is Kotlin to build the mobile application, and laravel for the back-end. After that, the fully functioned application is deployed to AWS Cloud.
Next Steps
The next technical step is to scale up the cloud service so it has high throughput in order to serve more users at the same time. We would also update our UI/UX based on our user's suggestions. Aside from that, we also need to do non-technical efforts such as starting a social media campaign on food waste issues and promoting our product as a solution.
