Inspiration
I drew my inspiration from personal experience.
What does a balance diet look and taste like when it comes up against rumbling hormones that are transforming your taste and smell during pregnancy? One concern most pregnant couples and individuals have is around good food! One of the most under researched parts of the health industry is related to Women. Millions of women around the world rely on google, hearsay, understaffed midwives, overworked obygyns, google or now chatgpt, to help them understand what is good and necessary to consume through the various stages of pregnancy.
What it does
The app will grab the information from the person (diet, allergies, weeks of pregnancy and cravings) and use this information to suggest recipes using gpt-4o in addition to a list of vitamins needed during pregnancy.
How I built it
The app was built in React Native as the frontend and Python (Flask) in the backend, using a Docker container and Cosmos DB hosted in Azure. For the use of the AI model, I use Azure OpenAI.
Challenges I ran into
As it is the first time I developed in React Native and Azure, there was learning challenges in such a short time.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Despite the learning challenges, I was able to develop and deploy a simple, nice and cute working app.
What I learned
There are multiple layers of nuances while designing an application with such global relevance. Culture, society, health history and individual preference are huge factors to consider when choosing or curating meals.
During the course of building this application, I’ve become acutely aware of the need for a platform that empowers women in the medical and psychological sense, to discover and enjoy meals that cater to their babies needs and theirs through every stage of pregnancy.
On the technical side, I was happy to finally be able to develop on technologies that I have wanted to try and was able to leverage this for a meaningful cause.
What's next for BumpBites
With AI it is my desire to quickly adapt these factors and support women with simple and enriching ideas of meals that will support and satisfy them. It also creates a community for women to empower and share ideas and experiences around food and feeding while pregnant. As I continue to develop BumpBites, more personalization will be added as well as tips, a planner and consistent checkups on food aversions and cravings. And of course, to be a frequently download app in the Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Microsoft Store
