Inspiration

AI agents are making it much easier for professionals to create applications, automations, and workflows. But after something is built, the world around it keeps changing: regulations evolve, APIs are deprecated, vendor policies change, security issues emerge, and assumptions that were valid at launch may no longer hold.

BuiltWatch was inspired by a simple question: who keeps watch over what our agents leave behind?

What it does

BuiltWatch is a Professional Agent that maintains a lightweight inventory of applications, automations, agents, and workflows that people have created.

It remembers only the context needed to understand what each system does, what it depends on, what it affects, and which external assumptions matter. Users can provide this information directly or import a profile prepared by the builder agent that already knows the project.

BuiltWatch checks a curated set of trusted, official sources on a daily schedule and whenever a user requests a check. These sources cover:

  • API changes and deprecations
  • Vendor and platform policies
  • Security advisories
  • AI provider updates
  • Regulations and privacy guidance
  • Communications and operational requirements

BuiltWatch does not attempt to monitor the entire Internet. Its coverage is explicit, so users can see what is being checked and identify any gaps.

Instead of forwarding every update, BuiltWatch performs the judgment-heavy task of asking:

Could this change affect a system I already run?

If nothing relevant is found, no alert is created. Coverage and check status remain visible.

If something may need attention, BuiltWatch explains:

  • what changed
  • which system may be affected
  • which saved detail connects the system to the change
  • why the change may matter
  • what should be reviewed next

The user then decides what to do. They can record the outcome, keep the system unchanged, update its profile, mark the finding as not applicable, or optionally send a prepared review to the builder agent.

Nothing changes automatically.

How we built it

BuiltWatch follows a simple lifecycle:

Build → Hand off → Remember → Watch → Match → Surface → Decide

A system can be added through a lightweight description from another agent or directly by the user. This avoids requiring developers to redesign, instrument, or rebuild their existing applications.

The saved profile contains only the information needed for impact analysis. Source code, API keys, private customer records, and confidential integrations are not required.

The system is checked against the curated source registry on a daily schedule or on demand. Unchanged source material and completed assessments are reused where possible, reducing unnecessary model calls and cost.

Strands Agents is used for the agentic reasoning required to:

  • organize imported system context
  • screen out clearly unrelated changes
  • investigate possible matches
  • connect findings to specific saved facts
  • generate concise explanations and review questions

The application runs on AWS using services including Lambda, DynamoDB, Cognito, EventBridge, Amazon Bedrock, and supporting cost controls.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest problem is not finding more information. It is deciding what actually matters.

A monitoring system can easily overwhelm people if it treats every vulnerability, regulation, vendor announcement, or technology update as relevant.

BuiltWatch therefore focuses on:

  • minimizing the amount of information stored about each system
  • distinguishing meaningful impact from simple keyword matches
  • requiring evidence for surfaced findings
  • showing the saved system detail that supports the connection
  • recording uncertainty instead of guessing
  • avoiding unnecessary alerts while keeping coverage visible
  • keeping the final decision with a person

Another challenge was making the system useful across different development environments. BuiltWatch is designed to work with applications and agents created using different tools, clouds, frameworks, and coding assistants.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are proud of keeping the idea focused.

BuiltWatch does not try to become another coding agent, security scanner, SIEM, or automatic remediation platform. Its role is narrowly defined: remember what exists and recognize when something in the outside world may require it to be reconsidered.

We are also proud that BuiltWatch complements other agents instead of replacing them. The original builder agent can remain responsible for fixing or updating a system, while BuiltWatch provides persistent awareness after the original build task is finished.

The platform keeps the human accountable for the final decision. It shows the evidence first, makes uncertainty visible, and records what the person decided.

What we learned

One of the main lessons from building BuiltWatch is that long-term agent usefulness is not only about completing the original task.

As AI agents create more applications and automations, there is also a continuity problem. The agent that built something may no longer be actively thinking about it months later, even though the environment around that system continues to change.

We learned that a small amount of persistent context, combined with careful relevance reasoning and transparent evidence, can provide more value than simply collecting more alerts or technical telemetry.

We also learned that trust depends on restraint. A useful monitoring agent must be clear about what it checks, what it does not know, and what it cannot guarantee.

What’s next for BuiltWatch

The next step is to make handoff between builder agents and BuiltWatch increasingly seamless while keeping manual onboarding available for systems created outside agentic development environments.

Future directions include richer agent-to-agent handoffs, additional trusted information sources, improved change-impact reasoning, integrations that return findings directly to builder agents, stronger source coverage and freshness indicators, and broader support for technical, regulatory, operational, and policy changes.

The long-term goal is simple:

You keep building. BuiltWatch remembers what you built and tells you when the world changes in a way that matters.
