Students often know what career they want—whether it's Data Science, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, or Cloud Computing—but struggle to answer the next question: "What should I learn and build next?"
There are thousands of online courses, tutorials, and certifications, but no personalized guide that connects a student's current skills to a realistic career path. We wanted to build an AI mentor that not only recommends what to learn but also suggests meaningful portfolio projects, identifies skill gaps, and creates a structured roadmap to help students become job-ready.
This idea led to BuildWise AI, an intelligent career development platform powered by Gemini.
What it does
BuildWise AI acts as a personalized AI career mentor.
Users enter their career goal, current skills, and experience level. The application uses Gemini to analyze the profile and generate:

- 💼 Portfolio project recommendations
- 📚 Learning resources

Instead of providing generic advice, BuildWise AI creates an actionable path tailored to each user.
How we built it
The application consists of a modern web frontend connected to a FastAPI backend.
The backend communicates with the Gemini API to understand user goals and generate personalized recommendations. Prompt engineering was used to ensure the responses are structured, practical, and relevant.
Our workflow includes:
- Collecting user career goals and existing skills
- Processing user input through Gemini
- Performing skill-gap analysis
- Generating personalized project ideas and learning roadmaps
- Presenting results through an intuitive user interface
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was generating recommendations that were both personalized and practical instead of generic.
We also worked on improving prompt engineering so Gemini could consistently produce structured career roadmaps, project suggestions, and actionable learning plans.
Another challenge was balancing response quality with performance while integrating AI seamlessly into the application.
