Inspiration

BuildMyRocket takes the traditional game of hangman out of this world! Inspired by the classic 90's arcade games such as space invaders and hangman, the two come together to create a web application that brings new users back to the retro age of games.

What it does

We chose this innovative approach to redesigning this game because of our common interest in bettering our skills and creating a web application that can help many people rediscover this classic. This new, fun version of hangman allows the user to create a profile, allowing for upgrades and user data storage. They can level up after winning a specific number of games, giving them the ability to view an awesome new graphic while challenging them further by reducing the number of wrong answers they are allowed before their rocket has serious malfunctions.

How we built it

Starting with the concept idea we then began with a basic hangman game, combining our prior skills with newly learned information to optimize our html, CSS, and JavaScript programs. We used a lot of trial and error when it came to implementing different features, including image display and user information integration, figuring out what was best for this application.

Challenges we ran into

All team members came into to this hackathon as a first time hacker, this proved to be difficult with no prior knowledge of expectations or ideas. With many having little background in the languages we used in the creation of this web application we found that these challenges also allowed us to have a greater scope of creativity and gain experience in an unforeseen way.

What's next for BuildMyRocket

We plan to better BuildMyRocket by creating usability through Auth0 that will save a user’s high score and record of wins/losses. This will allow the user to better challenge themselves to improve. We would also like to create new levels that will correlate with increasingly difficult words. As a user advances from level to level, they would unlock better and more innovative graphics and more challenging word banks. The user will also only be able to advance between levels only after they have met certain criteria.
