Build4Nurse: A Hands-Free Data Entry Solution for Healthcare Workers

Inspiration

Nurses spend 27% of their time entering data and 25% helping patients. This inefficiency leads to burnout and impacts patient care. Build4Nurse is a hands-free solution that reduces time spent on data entry, enabling nurses to focus more on patient care.

What It Does

Build4Nurse uses voice commands to streamline data entry. Nurses can input patient information by simply speaking, with commands like "enter," "pause," or "next." This system improves efficiency and reduces distractions during patient check-ins.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: Built with React.js for a dynamic, interactive UI.
  • Voice Input: Integrated the React Speech Recognition Library for seamless voice command handling.
  • FHIR Integration: Used HAPI FHIR API for healthcare data interoperability, ensuring Build4Nurse can connect with existing systems.

Challenges

  • Voice Recognition Accuracy: Ensuring consistent recognition of varied speech, including commands like "pause" and "next."
  • Latency: Minimizing delays between voice input and system response to maintain smooth user interaction.

Accomplishments

  • Seamless Integration: Successfully integrated voice commands with the UI and HAPI FHIR API for real-time data entry.
  • FHIR Compliance: Ensured interoperability with existing healthcare systems using HL7 FHIR standards.

What We Learned

We gained valuable insights into FHIR standards and speech recognition technology, which are crucial for healthcare interoperability and improving workflow efficiency.

What's Next

Next, we plan to integrate Apple Watch support, allowing nurses to interact with the system directly from their wrist, making it even more convenient to use in real-world healthcare settings.
