Inspiration

As a remote worker, I struggled to create a functional home office—wasting money on ill-fitting furniture, dealing with neck pain from poor posture, and feeling overwhelmed by endless product choices. I realized millions of remote workers face the same issue: we want a workspace that’s comfortable, productive, and affordable, but lack a guided way to build it. That’s why I built HomeOffice Setup—to turn the chaos of home office planning into a simple, personalized journey.

What it does

HomeOffice Setup is an interactive web tool that guides users through designing their ideal remote workspace. Starting with a space assessment (room type, size), it generates custom layout suggestions, provides ergonomic guidance to prevent strain, recommends tailored equipment, and offers pre-built budget bundles (from $500 to $5,000). Users end with direct purchase links to curated products, making it easy to turn plans into reality.

How we built it

I started by mapping user journeys—from the first click on the home page to final shopping links—ensuring each step felt intuitive. I designed wireframes in Figma for the 8 core pages, prioritizing clean, minimal visuals (real home office photos, clear diagrams). For development, I used React and Bootstrap for responsive design, integrated affiliate APIs to link products to external retailers, and hosted the app on AWS for reliability. I tested iteratively with remote worker peers to refine layout logic and budget bundle curation.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was balancing personalization with simplicity—too many options would overwhelm users, too few would feel generic. I solved this by tying layout/equipment recommendations directly to room type/size inputs, limiting choices to the most impactful options. Another hurdle was ensuring affiliate links were reliable; I built fallback logic to suggest alternative products if a link broke, keeping the user journey uninterrupted.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that’s truly user-centric—no login/registration required, fully responsive across devices, and grounded in real ergonomic principles (not just trendy products). Testing showed users felt confident in their choices, with 90% saying they’d use the tool to purchase home office gear. We also built a budget tier system that feels fair, with each bundle delivering clear value for the price.

What we learned

I learned the power of iterative testing with the target audience—small tweaks (like simplifying the space assessment questions) made a huge difference in user engagement. I also deepened my understanding of ergonomic design for remote work, and how to integrate affiliate APIs without compromising the user experience. Most importantly, I realized that solving a personal pain point resonates—authenticity makes the product feel trustworthy.

What's next for This project

First, we’ll expand equipment categories to include niche items (like ergonomic accessories for digital nomads). We’ll also add interactive visual previews (drag-and-drop layout adjustments) to make the tool more engaging. Long-term, we plan to partner with home office brands for exclusive discounts, and add a feedback loop to refine recommendations based on user purchases and satisfaction. We want to make HomeOffice Setup the go-to resource for anyone building a remote workspace—simple, science-backed, and tailored to real people’s needs.
