Inspiration
As someone who’s worked with early-stage green startups in the EU and US, I saw founders struggling to navigate fragmented sustainability resources—B Corp checklists scattered across sites, ESG supplier data hard to access, and green investors tough to connect with. I wanted to create a one-stop platform to streamline this journey, making it easier for entrepreneurs to turn their sustainable vision into profitable businesses.
What it does
SustainableStartup Advisor is a web platform for impact-focused founders, offering tools like a step-by-step B Corp certification pathway, interactive sustainable business model canvas, ESG supplier screening tool, global green certification database, and impact investor directory—all designed to guide users in building profitable, environmentally responsible companies.
How we built it
We started with mapping user workflows (e.g., B Corp certification progress tracking) and designing a minimalist, professional UI aligned with Western corporate aesthetics. We built the frontend with React for interactive elements (like the business model canvas) and the backend with Node.js/Express to handle database logic (PostgreSQL for supplier/investor data) and subscription management (Stripe integration). AWS hosted the platform, and PDFKit powered customizable report exports.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was curating accurate, region-specific ESG data for suppliers and certifications—ensuring EU vs. US eligibility criteria were precise, and investor filters (stage, ticket size) matched real-world Western capital markets. We also faced UI challenges in balancing functionality (5 core tools) with simplicity, so users wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a seamless progress-tracking system that aggregates user activity across all modules, and a supplier ESG scoring system (1–100) that aligns with Western sustainability standards. Most importantly, the platform’s intuitive design means founders spend less time on admin and more on building their businesses.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of Western ESG regulations and investor expectations, and learned how to balance complex data (e.g., certification eligibility) with user-friendly design. We also gained insights into subscription model optimization for SaaS tools targeting early-stage founders.
What's next for This project
We plan to add regional deep dives (e.g., EU Green Deal compliance tools, US state-level sustainability incentives), integrate more investor matching logic based on real-time funding trends, and build out a resource library of Western sustainability case studies to further support founders.
