Inspiration

When I started learning to code, nothing scared me more than a wall of red error text. Stack Overflow answers assumed I already knew the jargon, and most tools just dumped the fix without explaining why it broke. I built Bug Buddy for that version of me: a beginner who is stuck, frustrated, and close to giving up.

What it does

Bug Buddy turns confusing error messages into plain-English lessons. You paste an error (or a code snippet), pick your language, and get four things:

  • What happened: the error explained in simple words
  • Why it happened: the root cause, not just the symptom
  • How to fix it: corrected code you can copy in one click
  • What to learn: a short concept lesson so the same bug doesn't catch you twice

Every explanation is saved to your personal history, so you can revisit past bugs and see your own progress.

How I built it

  • Frontend: React + Tailwind CSS for a clean, distraction-free interface
  • Backend: Node.js + Express with an /explain API endpoint
  • AI: Claude API, with a structured prompt that forces beginner-friendly, step-by-step output
  • Database & Auth: Supabase for login and saving history
  • Deployment: Vercel (frontend) and Render (backend)

Challenges I ran into

  • Getting the AI to explain like a patient mentor instead of a textbook took a lot of prompt iteration.
  • Keeping responses in a consistent structure so the UI could render each section cleanly.
  • Building and shipping a complete full-stack app within the hackathon time limit.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • A working end-to-end product: paste an error, get a clear fix and lesson in seconds.
  • Output that is genuinely beginner-friendly, not just technically correct.
  • Shipping a polished, deployed app solo within the deadline.

What I learned

Good teaching is about empathy. The same fix can feel overwhelming or empowering depending on how it is explained. I also improved my skills in prompt design, API integration, and full-stack deployment.

What's next for Bug Buddy

  • Browser extension and VS Code plugin to explain errors where they happen
  • Support for more languages and frameworks
  • Multi-language explanations (including Urdu and Hindi) so more beginners can learn in their own language
  • Daily "bug of the day" mini-lessons and progress streaks
