Inspiration

We were inspired by a common problem that almost every streaming user experiences: buffering and unexpected playback interruptions. Waiting for a video to load can be frustrating, especially when users see only a loading indicator without any engaging interaction. We wanted to explore how these moments could become more entertaining through a creative, character-driven experience.

What it does

BufferBuddy TV is a smart TV application concept that makes simulated buffering and streaming interruptions more engaging. It features a video player experience, animated character reactions featuring Mochi, and sections such as Home, Characters, Analytics, Settings, and About. The interface is designed to be explored using TV-friendly navigation.

How we built it

We developed the project using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create the user interface, interactive navigation, video player experience, and character animations. We also packaged the web application in an Android WebView wrapper and tested it using an Android TV emulator to explore the television viewing experience.

Challenges we faced

One of our main challenges was making the interface and its interactive elements work correctly in a TV environment. We worked through issues with button interactions, remote navigation, video playback, and packaging the web application for emulator testing. Testing and troubleshooting helped us improve the working prototype and understand the additional steps needed for target-device compatibility.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned more about building interactive web applications, integrating video playback and animations, troubleshooting user interface issues, and testing a web-based application in a television environment. We also explored how creative interactions can make common streaming interruptions feel less frustrating.

What's next

We would like to improve the experience further by exploring real connectivity-event handling, more responsive character reactions, and broader compatibility testing on supported Fire TV or Vega OS environments.

Our goal is simple: make waiting during streaming interruptions a little more fun!
